TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - East Java is set to shut down 19 red light districts throughout the province. Head of Social Welfare Bureau of East Java Ratnadi Ismaun, said that the shut down is currently in progress.
In light of the shutting down of the Dolly and Jarak red light district, other red light districts are set to follow, such as those in Nganjuk, Madiun, Ponorogo, Lumajang, Malang, and Mojokerto. In 2012, there were a total of 7,793 prostitutes in 47 red light districts spread accross East Java, with Surabaya owning the highest number with seven red light districts.
Shutting down red light districts has becoming a routine agenda in the East Java province since 2010. East Java Governor Soekarwo and East Java Ulema Council, said that they wanted to establish a prostitution-free province.
In 2012, several red light districts in Blitar, Tulungagung, Tuban, Jombang, Malang Kota, Madiun, and Gresik were successfully shut down. Other cities like Surabaya and Banyuwangi later followed in suit.
