TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Social Agency has returned 176 beggars and homeless people (PMKS) to their regions on Friday. The beggars and homeless people are mostly from West and Central Java.
"We expect that they return to their regions and meet their families," said Head of the Agency Masrokhan.
He added that Jakarta gives no room for PMKS to flock the streets of Jakarta. Therefore, the social agency has deployed officers in nearly all street crossings in Jakarta.
Moreover, Masrokhan said that the agency has detained nearly 7,000 PMKS. However, he underlined that the measures will not work without social participation, suggesting the people of Jakarta not to give money to street beggars. "This act [giving money] has educated the beggars to be lazy and dependant to others," he said.
