TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration planned on re-organizing its parking system with a string of measures, among them by implementing an electronic parking system through parking meters.
The Jakarta Transportation Agency’s Parking Management Technical Unit chief, Sunardi Sinaga, said the agency would try out the parking meters on Jl. Agus Salim, popularly known as Jl. Sabang, in Central Jakarta, prior to installing them citywide.
“The trial will kick of next week,” Sunardi told Tempo on Sunday, September 21, 2014. “I will inform the fixed date later,” he added.
Sunardi said his agency was now preparing and fixing the necessary infrastructure around the area, such as parking signs and sign boards. He added the agency would not allocate its own budget to run the trial, which would last for three months, as vendors had pledged to cover all the projected expenses. “The equipment will be imported from Sweden,” he said.
Sunardi explained the agency would install 11 parking meters on Jl. Sabang—each for 10-15 vehicles with a fee of Rp4,000-5,000 an hour. In practice, he added, motorists must use special cards that they could top up at banks and other designated points. Among the banks are Bank DKI, BNI, Bank Danamon, BCA and BRI.
“The parking meter program does not use funds from the regional budget,” Sunardi said.
