Nearing Eid al-Adha, Cows' Price Continues to Rise

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - With the Islamic Day of Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) just two weeks away, the price of live cows has reportedly skyrocketed.
Chairman of the Indonesian Market Traders Association Ngadiran said that on average, the price of livestock in the market ranges from Rp2 to 4 million. As for the imported live cows, the increase is around USD500 to 1,000 per kilo of live cattle.
"The increase in demand this year is quite high," Ngadiran said on Sunday, September 21, 2014.
The decline in the supply of local live cows from Bali and West Nusa Tenggara has threatened supply of local live cow in Java. So far, stock of live cows in Java remains the biggest supply of livestock to meet the demand before Eid al-Adha.
In addition to the supply issue, another cause that caused the rising price of live cows is the delay of the arrival of imported live cows planned by the government this month.
"If the imported live cows do not come by the end of this month, I do not know how much the price of live cows will be," Ngadiran said.
In a bid to address the scarcity of live cows supply, Ngadiran hoped the government would speed up the importation of live cows before the peak demand of domestic live cows for Eid al-Adha.
For the record, this year's Eid al-Adha is predicted to fall on the 5th of October.
