TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Ragunan Zoo has set a target to achieve international certification by drafting a master plan for the zoo’s development, Ragunan Zoo director Marsawitri Gumay said on Saturday, September 20, 2014.
“We’re drafting the master plan this year. We’re hoping to complete to achieve [the international certification] within 5 years,” said Marsawitri, or also known as Wiwit.
The master plan, Wiwit said, will cover thematic development to make distinct the Ragunan Zoo from other zoos. Therefore, Wiwit explained, animal cages at the zoo will be modified, putting animal playground and cages in separate places.
According to Wiwit, the Ragunan Zoo must also function as a conservational area in order to reach the international certification.
“The conserved animals will be sent overseas in exchange of different animals from other zoos around the world,” she said.
Head of the supervisory board of Ragunan Zoo, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, said he wanted the zoo to be competitive among other zoos around the world.
“We have amazing assets. [Ragunan Zoo] must be better than Singapore’s,” Hashim said.
Therefore, Hashim suggested to craft a night safari program at Ragunan. He also called on Jakarta administration to provide better support for the city’s zoo.
