TEMPO.CO, Sorong - Genting Oil and Gas Limited has found new gas reserves in Bintuni, West Papua, which is larger than the one at Kasuari Block, said the spokesman of the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas), Bambang Dwi Djanuarto, yesterday.
According to Bambang, the location of the gas reserves is called the Red Well and "lies at the BP International dormitory, but not in BP’s working area."
The potential of the gas reserves were found after Genting conducted its preliminary study, seismic study and preliminary drilling. Genting still needs to conduct further drilling to confirm the finding.
Bambang calculated that the amount of oil and gas reserves could be more than 2.2 trillion cubic feet, and more if other wells were to be found. Currently, Genting is exploring Fakfak region in West Papua.
Bambang revealed that Genting will soon finalize its plan of development (POD) and set a target to produce gas by 2017 or 2018. To this date, the gas allocation from Genting remains undecided.
"There are three possibilities. [The gas] could be allocated for Petrokimia, distributed to LNG Tangguh or Genting might build its own refinery. It’s up to the government," Bambang said.
