TEMPO.CO, Kano - A group of gunmen, presumably member of the Boko Haram milita, attacked a teacher training college in the Nigerian city of Kano, killing least 15 people and injuring 35 others on Wednesday local time.
Police Commissioner Adenerele Shinaba said that the attackers had been approached by police who were suspicious of their movements, only for them to open fire around the school. "Nearly all the victims were in classrooms inside the campus when two attackers started shooting," said Shinaba.
A witness said that before the gunmen started shooting, they ordered the female students to put their head down. "You don't believe Boko Haram exists?" said a student imitating the suspect. Soon after, police breached the campus and shot down a suspect wearing a bomb vest. "The bomb exploded after he was shot, tearing him to pieces," said Shinaba.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan expressed his deepest condolences to the victim's families on the tragic event. Jonathan’s government and the Nigerian military have received harsh criticism for not being able to contain the movements of Boko Haram.
