TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Kingdom's (UK) Foreign Secretary Phillip Hammond said he was confident that residents of Scotland would vote to remain within the Union during a visit to Copenhagen, yesterday.
"My hope is that the Scottish people will vote to remain as a part of the Union - the Union which has successfully delivered progress for all UK citizens for more than decades," said Hammond during a press conference, following a meeting with his Danish counterpart Martin Lidegaard, as reported by Xinhua this morning.
Yesterday, Scotland residents went to the ballots for an independence referendum, where they were asked the question: "Should Scotland be an independent nation?"
"I am sure that when the Scots think carefully about the benefits that the Union can offer, and the risks that they face should Scotland secede from the UK, they would vote to stay within the Union," said Hammond.
The Scottish people would be able to have a greater say in the government if they choose to stay in the Union, because there will be a significant 'devolution of power' to the government of Scotland, Hammond added.
