TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 300 doctors have been infected by the Ebola virus, while 144 has died from the disease in the outbreak that has ravaged West Africa, according to Russia's consumer and well-being protection ombudsman, Rospotrebnadzor on its' website on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.
"301 doctors have been infected, and 144 has died from their infections," wrote Rospotrebnadzor in a statement, as quoted RIA Novosti.
According to the ombudsman, Liberia, particularly its' capital city of Monrovia, is the area that experiences the worst case of the epidemic.
In a separate outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, 66 cases have been reported with 37 fatalities. Rospotrebnadzor noted that this outbreak is not related to the epidemic that has ravaged elsewhere in West Africa.
The consumer protection agency also wrote that one team of Russian epidemiologist have been stationed in Guinea to assist in the efforts to combat the disease.
"Rospotrebnadzor has stationed a team of epidemiologist in Guinea's capital, where they are assisting Guinean medical experts with laboratory diagnoses, and socialising anti-epidemic measures along with the Guinean Ministry of Health," said Rospotrebnadzor on their website.
Ebola has claimed more than 2,400 lives in West Africa since the outbreak was first identified in March, according to the latest estimation by the World Health Organization (WHO). Outbreaks have been reported in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ebola virus is transmitted via direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids and/or tissues of infected animals and humans. To date, no cure is commercially available.
A number of countries - including Russia, the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Japan - are working together towards producing a vaccine against the deadly disease.
