TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for the Middle East, Robert Serry, has brokered an agreement to rebuild the Gaza Strip. Under the agreement, Palestinian Authorities and private sector developers would be given the right to begin and supervise the reconstructions without further delay.
"An agreement has been reached between Israeli and Palestinian authorities, and works will begin as soon as possible," said Serry, as reported by BBC News on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.
Approval has to come from both parties to alleviate Israel's concerns over the use of imported construction material by Hamas to build supply tunnels into its' territories. In order to address the issue, Serry has called on Israel to reopen the border crossings between Israel and the Gaza Strip - which would allow authorities to monitor the flow of goods in and out of Gaza.
The issue of development in Gaza will be discussed in a meeting in Egypt on October 12, 2014. Israel's Defence Ministry is reported to have registered its' interest to join in the discussion.
UN reported that the extent of the devastation of Gaza's infrastructure is extremely concerning. More than 18,000 civilian homes have been destroyed, leaving more than 100,000 people without proper shelter.
