TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Olympiakos Piraeus secured a 3-2 victory over last year’s Champions League runner-up Atletico Madrid, to make a dream-start to their Group A campaign on Tuesday.
The Greek champion led for 13 minutes at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium when a slight-slack in the Atletico defense allowed young French defender Arthur Masuaku to release a low shot from the corner.
The situation got even better for the host just after 30 minutes, when Ibrahim Afellay doubled the score.
Mario Mandzukic’s goal tightened the gap for Atletico seven minutes before halftime, but the visiting team fell behind again to Kostas Mitroglou’s 73rd-minute strike.
Atletico substitute Antoine Griezmann then deliverd a finishing blow with a close-range strike with four minutes left, but Michel's team managed to hold on to their lead.
