TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Home Affairs Ministry suggested that the Jakarta provincial government must expand administrative cities to bring services closer to public. "Jakarta must expand its administrative area," regional autonomy director general Djohermansyah Djohan told Tempo on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.
Djohermansyah asserted that administrative expansion can be done in East Jakarta, South Jakarta and West Jakarta. He said that East Jakarta has a population of around two million people, which is why administrative expansion is needed. "Jakarta has always been conservative. It will always have five regions plus the Thousand Islands Regency. Jakarta is not going anywhere, so there has to be a new approach," he said.
Djorhermansyah said Jakarta also needs to decentralize its services to lower level governments. "Jakarta is too centralized. Authorities are in the City Hall. If [Jakarta] wants tp provide good services, it should bring services closer to the lower levels," he said.
