Indonesia only has 1% Share in Global Furniture Market

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Industry Association (Asmindo) is targeting to note an export value of Rp23.8 trillion by the end of 2014. Despite the large number, said Asmindo chairman Taufik Gani, the target only accounts for one 1 percent of the global supply.

According to Taufik, Asmindo aims to raise its exports value by 17.2 percent from 2013's Rp20.3 trillion. The target will be met, he said, because from January to September 2014 exports value has reached Rp 22.7 trillion.

Currently, Indonesian furniture is targeted mostly to countries in America and Europe. Soenoto, chairman of the Indonesian Rattan Furniture and Craft Association (AMKRI), said the industry is now also eyeing Russia, a market that favors classic furniture design made from wood or rattan.

To date, furniture export transaction to Russia is still relatively small due to distance and language constraints. "Not all Russians fluent in English," Soenoto said Wednesday. However, Soenoto sees that there is a bright prospect in Russia, since transaction trends continue to increase albeit modestly.
