TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT PLN’s coal division chief Helmi Najarmudi said coal consumption of power plants from the beginning of the year to August 2014 has reached 50 million tons. He predicted the coal consumption would reach 72 million tons by the end of the year.
"PLN has 74 PLTU (steam-fueled power plant) and the needs for coal are 74 million tons," Helmi said yesterday.
Around 62 percent of PLN’s power plant comes from coal energy and costs of electricity production with coal fuel cheaper than oil. For example, in order to produce 1 kWh (kilowatt hour) from coal needs Rp350, while oil needs Rp2,080.
With electricity growth of 9.4 percent every year, PLN needs additional coal supplies of 10 million tons per year. PLN is currently collaborating with 23 coal companies to meet its need for electrical power. Those companies include PT Adaro Indonesia, Berau Coal, Triguna and Arutmin.
