TEMPO.CO, Semarang - The Central Java provincial government will implement a regulation on the requirement to speak Javanese for a day per week. Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo has signed Central Java Governor Regulation Number 55 of 2014 regarding languages, literature and Java scripts.
"At Central Java government institutions, [people] must speak Javanese for a day per week," he said yesterday.
Previously, Central Java has set a regulation on speaking Javanese at religious sermons, village/community meetings, traditional institutions, community activities, and social organizations. Governor Ganjar has amended the regulation.
In the new regulation, people are required to speak Javanese at working environment of Central Java institutions, both formal and non-formal situations for a day per week.
To date, they have yet to decide which day that people are required to speak Javanese. They are still considering it since currently a number of regents/cities in Central Java have also implemented the requirement to speak Javanese.
