TEMPO.CO, Las Vegas - BlackBerry has shown interest in joining the wearables world. But instead of making their own smartwatch or bands, the Canadian company is currently experimenting to run its BlackBerry Messenger on the existing wearables.
"I would love BBM to be running on a wearable," said John Sims, the Head of Enterprise BlackBerry, in the CTIA's Super Mobility Week as quoted by PC Mag. "We're not releasing anything at the moment, but it's definitely an area of research for us."
Computer World reported the internal wearables research at BlackBerry includes smartwatches and even smart glasses. The tests were aimed at determining how well applications work on smart glasses and watches, according to Sims. The experimental wearables pair with your phone, and communicate via a "voice interface."
BlackBerry also appointed new head for their 'technology assets' that covers its QNX OS department, the Certicom cryptography lab, the Paratek antenna acquisition, and the Project Ion Internet of Things platform.
Sims added that these technologies are part of a shift from being a device-centric company to being more of a software and services company.
The BBM’s availability on the wearables will be an important leap for the company since there are only few of currently-existing smartwatches featuring 'chatting' services.
