TEMPO.CO, New York - The Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Israel of committing war crimes by attacking three United Nations-run schools in the Gaza Strip used as shelters for Palestinian refugees. The attacks killed 45 Palestinian civilians and social workers who had sheltered there.
"The Israel military proceeded with the attacks despite knowing that the location is near a school where civilians have taken refuge. The attacks have injured and killed civilians," said HRW Advisor Fred Abrahams.
Based on the investigation by HRW, there were no military targets in the three locations that were attacked.
During the attack to Beit Hanoun School, which took place on July 24, Israel claimed to have fired a missile towards Hamas rebels in the area. However, seven other witnesses denied the claim. On July 30, Israel once again claimed that they were launching an attack in retaliation to Hamas' attacks, despite no crucial evidence was present.
