TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State radio network of Indonesia, the Radio Republic Indonesia (RRI), held an all-night-long shadow puppet performance (Wayang Kulit) in Palembang as a form of commitment to support the preservation of local cultural arts of the community so that it could exist and continue to be enjoyed by the young generations of Indonesia.
The event is to welcome the celebration of the radio’s 69th birthday which falls on September 11, 2014, said Head of RRI Palembang, Agung Susatyo.
Agung explained that the event of ‘wayang kulit’ is held with the association of the United Indonesian Puppeteers (Pepadi) of South Sumatra Province in the RRI Auditorium, Palembang in September 13.
The event is said to be open for public, and for the people who are interested in seeing the ‘wayang kulit’ event, they are welcome to come by to the auditorium of RRI, free of charge.
Accoring to Agung, he is committed in preserving the local cultural arts so each activity always gives an opportunity for art lovers and cultural groups to perform in RRI’s auditorium and the state-owned radio station program.
Several local arts that oftens perform in the auditorium and went on air through a special broadcasting program of local art and culture ‘RRI Pro 2’ are “Dul Muluk” and “Wayang Kulit”.
RRI Palembang is also open to other local cultural arts to utilize the state-owned broadcaster to preserve local cultural arts.
“Let us utlize this public broadcaster to arouse the society’s love towards local cultural arts, let RRI become your home or a development shelter for talented and creative art and culture,” Agung told reporters.
