TEMPO.CO, Pacitan - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) organized tsunami preparedness training sessions in six tsunami-prone coastal areas on the rim of the Indian Ocean, namely Bali, Banyuwangi, Pacitan, Gunung Kidul, Bantul and Kulon Progo.
“The trainings are done simultaneously to improve the preparedness of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agencies (BPBD) against tremors with tsunami potential,” BMKG spokesman Indra Gunawan said in Pacitan, East Java on Tuesday, September 9, 2014.
Indra said tsunami risks in Java’s southern coastal areas were high as they sit on the intersection of the Eurasia and Indo-Australia tectonic plates.
He added all regional governments had been advised the formulate policies on disaster mitigation to reduce possible impacts of tsunamis.
Pacitan BPBD chief executive Didit Maryanto said tsunami awareness programs had been implemented in two villages in the regency, viz. Sirnoboyo and Kembang. “We keep on disseminating information on potential tremors and tsunamis to residents,” he said.
