TEMPO.CO, New York - Japan’s men’s single tennis player Kei Nishikori shocked the US Open by defeating the world’s no. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the semifinal battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York, earlier this morning. Nishikori becomes the first Japanese who rolls into US Open Tournament final.
"It's just an amazing feeling, beating the number one player," said Nishikori as quoted by BBC.
"I hope it's big news in Japan. I feel the support from Japan. It's 4 o'clock in the morning but I hope a lot of people are watching."
Nishikori outlasted Djokovic in 2 hours and 52 minutes. The Japanese made the better start, breaking twice to take the first set against a strangely flat Djokovic.
"A lot of unforced errors, a lot of short balls. I just wasn't myself," said Djokovic.
In his Grand Slam final debut on Tuesday, Nishikori is set to face Marin Cilic from Croatia.
