TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Upon returning from a trip from Ebola-hit countries in West Africa, a doctor from the United States' (US) Center for Disease Control (CDC), Tom Frieden, has said that the threat of Ebola was becoming more and more serious as the spread of the diseases becomes more rampant.
"Despite the various mitigation and control efforts from a number of countries and organizations, the number of reported Ebola cases continues to climb. The disease is spreading much faster than initially expected," said Frieden to Fox News yesterday.
Frieden called for the establishment of more quarantine centers and clinics in West Africa and more specialized training for local medical staff in the region, in order to assist with the global efforts to stop the deadly disease from spreading even further.
"A lot of people underestimate the dangers that these Ebola outbreaks pose to our society. There is a severe lack of adequate hospitals, clinics, medical facilities, doctors, nurses and medications to treat thousands of Ebola patients in the region," according to a statement released by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Recent WHO reports stated that 3,069 people have tested positive for Ebola and 1,552 have died since the outbreak began in the remote jungles of Guinea earlier this year. Without proper mitigation, WHO has estimated that at least 20,000 people in the region would be at risk of catching the deadly hemorrhagic disease.
