TEMPO.CO, Tangerang The Health Agency of Tangerang regency administration has administered anti-rabies vaccines to 10 residents of Taban and Ancol Pasir villages, Jambe district, who have been attacked by wild monkeys recently.
Dr. Manik Kusmayoni from the agency said the residents were vaccinated lest they were infected with rabies. “It’s likely they have rabies,” he told Tempo on Tuesday, September 2, 2014.
Manik said the agency had coordinated with its animal husbandry counterpart to tackle a possible rabies outbreak in the regency spread by the wild monkeys.
A total of ten residents in the regency in the ages of 5-50 have been bitten by wild monkeys in the past three months. “The attacks were sudden and random,” said Lukman, a resident from Ancol Pasir.
The monkey attacks have troubled some 4,000 families in Taban village and another 3,000 in Ancol Pasir village. “We are scared to come outside in the afternoon. All doors and windows are locked,” he said.
