TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations has offered President Susilo Bambang Yudhyono (SBY) to work for the international organization after his term ends. “As far as we know, he will consider all those offers,” said Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa on Monday.
Similar offers also came from other organizations. Marty declined to reveal the name of the organizations. He said that those offers were a recognition on SBY’s role during his 10-year term as president and international actor.
Last week, SBY met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the Sixth Global Forum of the Aliance of Civilizations in Bali. SBY also met Iay Ameen Madani, Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation.
Since last year, there has been rumor that SBY is ready to become an important figure in UN headquarters in New York after Ban’s term ends. SBY has a good image in international forums. Indonesia successfully became the host for UN conference on climate change in Bali in late 2007. Several international conferences were also held in Indonesia, such as WTO.
Developed countries praised SBY’s speech in G20 High-Level Conference in Pittsburgh, the United States, in 2009.
In his speech, SBY explained that Indonesia is committed to reduce emission by 26 percent by 2020 on its own even though developed countries are the one who are obligated to reduce emission as since the 19th century, they have polluted the atmosphere with greenhouse gas and exhaust of fossil fuels.
