TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Twelve parents of the Jakarta International School (JIS) students paid a visit to the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) office earlier today. "Our kids cannot go to school since August," said Intim Solachma, the parents’ representative. "We are confused why our school was closed."
JIS Kindergarten was shut down on April 22 by the Education Ministry after failing to show its license. JIS has only a license for Elementary up to Senior High school education.
The school’s shut down came after a string of sexual abuse cases had been revealed on March. The Education Ministry then decided to shut down the kindergarten as per 2014/2015.
"Prior to August, our kids have had numerous days off," said Intim. He added that the JIS was supposed to begin the school year on August 14, yet the school informed that there was no education activity. "Our kids already feel comfortable in JIS, therefore moving will be difficult," he said.
Komnas HAM Commissioner Nur Kholis said that the commission will clarify the matter. "If the school shut down the kindergarten for no clear reason, this can be a violation towards the rights for education," he said. "We will assess the case, apart from the current penal proceedings."
