Rupiah Hopes for Positive News

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The absence of external and internal sentiments keeps the rupiah stable against the greenback, with rates staying between Rp11,650 and Rp11,750 per US dollar. Ariston Tjendra, chief researcher at Monex Investindo Futures, said the rupiah is waiting for positive news from domestic and overseas economic data that will be released this week.
"Investors will make their investment decision after seeing the inflation and trade balance data, as well as the latest developments of China and the United States," Ariston said yesterday.
If the releases are as the market expected, it is likely that the will strengthen a bit. However, if indexes fall below expectations, the rupiah will stagnate.
This week, the market is also anticipating the European Central Bank's (ECB) decision on whether or not it will increase their monetary stimulus. ECB's move could weaken the euro, and if the currencies of 17 countries are corrected against the US dollar, developing markets' currencies will be affected.
