TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political psychologist Hamdi Muluk said the government of Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo - Jusuf 'JK' Kalla will be exposed to impeachment if the coalitions collected at the House of Representatives (DPR) are minorities.
Currently the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), the National Awakening Party (PKB), the National Democrats Party (PND), and the People's Conscience Party (Hanura) have merely garnered 207 seats at the parliament. On the other hand, the Merah-Putih coalition has 292 seats.
"Morally, the Merah-Putih coalition is stronger. If there was an impeachment proposal one day, the Jokowi government would be in trouble," Hamdi said yesterday.
Impeachment is the removal of president and vice president's positions, which is proposed by DPR members to the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) on the recommendation of the Constitutional Court (MK). This is stipulated on Article 7B of 1945.
According to the Article, the impeachment proposal is valid if it was agreed by two-third of DPR members.
Hamdi said providing evidence for impeachment to the MK is very difficult. Historically, Indonesia has never carried out a legal and formal impeachment.
Should the impeachment be unproven later on, it will still shake the government's stability. "Psychologically, it is highly possible for the red-and-white coalition to take that action," said the psychologist.
