TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has recently said he wants to follow Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's footsteps and become the country's number one.
"I want to become president," Ahok told Tempo in an exclusive interview on Thursday, August 21, 2014.
Ahok said he would run for president in 2019 on condition that Jokowi failed to display sound performance in helming the nation.
"If he shows good performance, I will not run for presidency," the would-be Jakarta governor said, adding that "someone's true character is tested when he is in power."
Ahok, however, said he did not want to assume things and also balked at commenting as to whether Jokowi would be successful in spearheading the country.
"Let history speak for itself," Ahok said.
