TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) noted that the export of completely built-up (CBU) cars reached 105,251 units in the first semester of this year. The number shows a 7.56-percent year-on-year (YOY) increase.
The exports of completely knocked down (CKD) vehicles reached 63,750 units, a 3.86-percent YOY increase.
Meanwhile, components export recorded a significant decline. From January to July 2014, the national automotive components exports fell 80 percent to 2,205,762 units.
One of Indonesia's top contributors of car export is PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN). In the first semester, Toyota exported 78,872 units of CBU cars.
Agus Tjahajana Wirakusumah, director general of International Industries Cooperation at the Industry Ministry, said Indonesia must prioritize the export of sedan to be able to compete in the global market. Sedan dominates the market by 90 percent, while Indonesian producers are still focusing on building the family-oriented 7-seaters type.
"Slowly, [car manufacturers] should be encouraged to increase sedan exports," he said on Monday.
