TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chairman of the Democrat Party Max Sopacua denied that the party goes into opposition following the ruling from of the Constitutional Court (MK) upholding the victory of president elect Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo as the winner of the presidential election.
In fact, Max said the Democrat would stand as a counterweight, not an opposition party.
"We won’t go into opposition. It’s a bit extreme," said Max to Tempo yesterday. However, he has not clarified what he meant as 'counterweight'.
Although his party will not join the Jokowi-JK coalition, Max said Democrat would be critical to the policies of the new government.
"Since the beginning, we have been committed to becoming a counterweight should Prabowo lose the election," he said.
Previously, the Democrat Party declared its support for Prabowo-Hatta pair and according to Max, the decision to support the pair was the one made by the leaders of the party.
To date, the party has yet to decide whether to be within the new government. However, several cadres of the party join the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla campaign team during the election.
