TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The city of Surabaya in East Java is preparing to host the 2014 Asia Fashion Week that will be held from August 15 to 18. As many as 37 national and foreign designers will showcase their masterpieces in the event and Surabaya’s administration is hoping that the city will become alternative Indonesian fashion center in addition to Jakarta.
“This is a great opportunity for Surabaya,” said Wiwiek Widayati the Head of Surabaya Tourism Agency on Friday.
This will be the first time for Surabaya to hold this international event and the city sees that it will be good for the trade development.
“This will be a spectacular show,” said Arwin Sharma, the President and CEO Group Fashion Week.
According to Arwin, the international designers to participate in the event come from India, Russia, Srilanka, Australia, Brunei, Nepal, Bolivia, and Mexico. The former supermodel who is now the Unesco/UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, Bibi Russel, will also delivering a workshop about fashion mode development in Asia.
Ina Silas, the General Manager of the House of Sampoerna, said that models and designers of the Asian Fashion Weeks will be invited to be in touch with Surabaya’s local tradition by participating in Indonesia’s Independence Day celebration.
The international fashion show will be held in the Java paragon Hotel and involve 60 Indonesian models and ten international models.
