TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A single exhibition of Pupuk Daru Purnomo’s art work presents the reflection of life of an artist from Yogyakarta, Central Java.
"This exhibition is about looking at myself, introspecting the life that I have been living. About family matters, love and death," Pupuk said yesterday.
Although nearly all of his works are inspired by his life experiences, his works represent many people’s experiences.
The exhibition is different from his other exhibitions held before since this one exhibition is held after Pupuk was cured from eye problem. "I have struggled three to four years in search of medications and went to physician experts not only in Indonesia, but also in foreign countries," Pupuk said.
The exhibition is an expression of his gratitude towards life that has taught him to stay alive and never give up.
One of his works displayed at the exhibition is titled Potret Diri & Gunting (Self Portrait & Scissors), which tells a story about Pupuk’s life journey several years ago during his attempt to deal with eye problem due to the abnormal retinal function and cataract disease.
The statue forms a middle-aged man without arms. The face of the statue looks furious and hurt with a scissor sticking to the eye.
"It pictures my critical condition at the time. I was in the stage of extreme frustration. There was anger, [I felt] helpless, desperate, [and] it's like I wanted to stab my eyes. That’s just an expression of being human that are full of fragility when being tested with temptations," Pupuk said.
The exhibition titled Me, Myself and Eye curated by Jim Supangat is held on August 13-25 at he National Gallery, Jakarta. The exhibition is opened to public.
