TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kurtubi, an expert on oil and gas from the Center for Petroleum and Energy Economics Studies, said the stock of natural gas in Indonesia was able to meet the demand of gas in household sector. Therefore, it could replace the use of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).
"We need to change [LPG with natural gas] because it woud be dangerous if household energy depends on imported goods," he told Tempo. Kurtubi explained that pipe gas, obtained from underground mining, can replace LPG.
Pipe gas comprises of city gas, unlike that of LPG. If contains C3 (propane) and C4 (butane), pipe gas chemical composition is C1 (methane) and C2 (ethane). "We have plenty of C1 and C2 in Indonesia. No import needed," he said.
However, Kurtubi mentioned that the government is yet from realizing the construction of pipe gas infrastructure in Indonesia, despite the fact that "pipe gas is far cheaper than LPG".
