TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States formed a special team to investigate the death of Major General Harold Greene during an attack in Afghanistan last Tuesday. Greene was the highest ranking US military officer who was killed in an ambush.
The US Department of Defense said that the shooting occurred within Camp Qargha training facility located in the Marshal Famim National Defense University in Kabul. According to NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), at the time there was a shootout between Afghanistan rebels and local ISAF forces in the area.
Afghanistan was Greene's first assignment in a war zone. With an engineering background, he was assigned to prepare the Afghanistan armed forces to fight after the US military coalition left the country in early 2014.
"A person dressed as an Afghan soldier opened fire and hit many international and Afghan soldiers," said General Mohammad Zahir Azimi, Spokesperson for the Afghanistan Ministry of Defense.
The attack also injured one German and two Afghanistan high ranking officers. "There may be around 15 coalition personnel including American soldiers who were wounded. The dead gunmen was believed to be an Afghan soldier who had served his duty for quite some time," said Pentagon official John Kirby.
Currently there are no parties who claim responsibility for the attack although Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid "praised" the attack.
