TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Labor Institute director Andy William Sinaga said on Sunday the huge flow of urbanization to Jakarta after Lebaran is due to not only the assumption that Jakarta has a lot of job fields, but also the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) and the Jakarta Health Card (KJS) policies.
KJP and KJS make newcomers believe that everything is free in Jakarta and life in Jakarta would be easier than in villages.
Andy said life in Jakarta is not that easy because money and skills are still crucial in order to survive in Jakarta while many newcomers from rural areas have none of them.
“Mr. Deputy Governor (Basuki Tjahaja Purnama) has said that Jakarta is open for anyone, but they have to have skills and money. These two things are often ignored by newcomers,” he said.
Those who have no skills and money usually end up working odd jobs in Jakarta. In some cases, some of them become illegal settlers or criminals that burden Jakarta.
“Those are the effects of KJP and KJS. Both policies are good, but they also attract people that may not be ready to live in Jakarta. They think that everything will be easy,” he said.
