TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Water supply distribution in Jakarta has reached a point of grave goncern. Meyritha Maryanie, Head of Corporate Communications dan Social Responsibilities Division of PT PAM Lyonasse Jaya, said that water supply in Jakarta remains the same since that of 1998, which is 17,000 liters per second.
The number, Meyritha said, cannot suffice water supply demand in Jakarta, particularly that next year the Capital City will be having water supply shortage of 9,100 liters per second. "This means that we have an extreme shortage."
Jakarta water supply is supported by two water companies, PAM Lyonasse Jaya (Palyja) and PT Aetra Air Jakarta. Palyja now supports 8,000 liters per second for its customers, while Aetra handles the rest. "We distributed 8,000 liters per second of water for 200,000 customers. Now we have 400,000 customers," said Meyritha.
As for other sources, the water quality in Jakarta is still at low level. Water Observer from Universitas Indonesia (UI) Firdaus Ali confirmed it, saying that "not all water in Jakarta can serve as water supply."
