TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The State Electricity Company (PLN) has started to maintain its power stations by temporarily shutting down 16 power stations of 6,706 megawatt capacity starting July 24 until August 5. The power-down plan was initiated since the electricity consumption in industrial areas would decrease during the Eid al-fitr moment.
"The power consumption in industrial areas will be lower during the Eid al-fitr because industries had halted their production operation," PLN I Operation Director for Java-Bali-Sumatra, I Gede Agung Ngurah told Tempo earlier today.
Ngurah explained that the normal daily consumption in Java and Bali have averagely reached 23,350 megawatt. Meanwhile, the PLN projected the highest consumption on July 28 would only reach 14,460 megawatt.
Bambang Dwiyanto, Senior Manager of Corporate Communication at the PLN, said not all units at the 16 power stations would be shut down.
"There will only be one or two units to be switched off based on the projection of the power consumption," Bambang said.
Among the deactivated power stations include Paiton Steam-fueled Power Plant in Probolingo, Gresik and Indramayu. The temporary shut-down was carried out since the power reserves in Java would be enough to cover the decreasing power consumption.
According to Bambang, a number of units at the Paiton PLTU had been turned off since Thursday, and it would last for five to six days. Bambang predicted the electricity consumption would increase two days after the Eid and return to normal a week after.
