TEMPO.CO, Mosul - The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) on Thursday destroyed a shrine containing Prophet Jonah's tomb, which is considered as a holy site by both Muslims and Christians.
"ISIS militants have destroyed the Prophet Younis [Jonah] shrine east of Mosul city after they seized control of the mosque completely," a security source told the Iraq-based al-Sumaria News as quoted by Al Arabiya.
A witness who wished to remain anonymous, said that ISIS militants first stop people from praying and later put explosives around and inside the mosque before blowing it up in front of public view.
An official and Mosul residents told AFP that it took at least an hour for the extremists to destroy the shrine. ISIS has so far destroyed 30 shrines, as well as 15 mosques in and around Mosul.
