TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Emerson Yuntho, legal and justice division coordinator at the Indonesian Corruption Watch (ICW), has deplored the planned Eid remission for convicted corruptors as it would not give a deterrent effect for them. "Corruptors should not obtain any remission," he said yesterday.
Remission for corruptions can be found in the Justice and Human Rights Minister’s Circular No. M.HH-04.PK.01.05.06/2013, which revises the Government Regulation No.99/2012 about the rights of prisoners. The government argued that those who had been punished before the regulation was issued also have the rights to obtain remission. "We will also review that ministerial regulation," said Emerson.
About 10,532 prisoners in West Java have been proposed to be given Eid remission. It also applies to corruptors at Sukamiskin Prison in Bandung.
Ibnu Chuldun, Head of Correctional Division to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of West Java, said there were 137 corruptors in Sukamiskin and other prisons that are proposed to be given Eid remission.
