TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The National Anti-narcotics Agency (BNN) destroyed 9,988.5 grams of crystal meth smuggled from Iran on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. BNN spokesman Sr. Comr. Sumirat Dwiyatno said the meth was seized from members of an Iranian drug syndicate network, identified by their initials only as MST, 37, MJD, 44, and British national SHB, 25.
“After arresting of the suspects, it turned out that there was an additional 9,696.2 grams of methamphetamine sent by SHB to the custom’s office in Jakarta,” Sumirat said at his office on Tuesday, July 22, 2014. He said the meth package was sent by SHB on June 21, 2014 and arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 1 2014.
Sumirat explained the Iranian syndicate attempted to smuggle the meth by mixing it with white powder to avoid X-ray checks. “But it was uncovered when an official became suspicious of the package,” he said.
Sumirat said the methamphetamine destroyed on Tuesday also comprised the 302.8 gr seized from JP, 50, a resident of Moluku, Ujung Pandang, South Sulawesi. “He was caught receiving a meth package from Jakarta containing 302.8 gr of methamphetamine divided into three transparent plastic bags,” Sumirat said.
From the two cases, Sumirat added, BNN had confiscated a total of 9,999 gr of category 1 methamphetamine. He said 10.5 gr of the meth was set aside for lab tests and evidence to be presented before the court. “So the total methamphetamine destroyed was 9,988.5 grams,” Sumirat said.
