TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia took an active part in formulizing an ambitious and transformative world development after the Millennium Development Goals that are about to expire in 2015.

Indonesia has consistently displayed its active participation when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, along with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and British Prime Minister David Cameron, co-chaired the High Level Panel of Eminent Person from June 2012 to May 2013 and gave recommendations to the United Nations' secretary general.

The Panel processed and summarized the recommendations in a document titled "A New Global Partnership: Eradicate Poverty and Transform Economies through Sustainable Development" to be handed over to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in May 2013.

The UN secretary General then released the recommendations in a document titled "A Life of Dignity for All". Another way of participation was the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG), which was formed based on the mandate declared by Rio+20: The Future We Want, consisting of 193 nations governed by a troika system. Indonesia shared its vote with China and Kazakhstan.

After 13 summits over the last one and a half years, the OWG finally released a document titled "Sustainable Development Goals" (SDGs) to be submitted to the UN secretary general during the 69th General Meeting of the United Nations on September 2014. President SBY's active role as a co-chair of the High Level Panel of Eminent Person was followed up with hard works of and collaborations between the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), the Presidential Working Unit for the Supervision and Management of Development (UKP4) and Presidential Special Delegation Office for MDGs (KUKPRI MDGs) in the OWG.

All parties are putting their best efforts to ensure the achievement of MDGs-based development. Indonesia is focusing on several key objectives, including accommodation of sexual and reproductive healthcare under the health and gender goal, deforestation and land degradation prevention, and development and implementation of transparent and accountable institution. In addition, SDGs document has accommodated means of implementation that explain steps in partnerships to achieve goals in the SDGs.

Considering the importance of the post-2015 development framework, the new government is expected to adjust its development priority with the SDGs, to from a special institution to supervise SDGs translation in the archipelago context and to achieve the development goals and put Indonesia in an equal position with other countries.

After a 35-hour deliberation, the Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals reached a consensus and the document has been unanimously adopted by OWG state members on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 13.22 in New York. (*)
