BPS Projects Reasonable Inflation Growth in July

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Central Statistics Agency (BPS) chief Suryamin predicted July's inflation hike will be reasonable if the prices of staple goods remain stable up until to Eid.
At last year's Lebaran, inflation surged due to rising fuel prices. This year, Suryamin is worried of an inflation hike caused by increasing beef prices. "We hope (the increase) will not be too high, so it does not burden the inflation much," he said.
BPS deputy for distribution and service, Sasmito Hadi Wibowo, estimated July's inflation to be under one percent. Previously, he projected the inflation growth to exceed one percent due to Eid, new school year, and elections.
Conversely, Juniman, an economist from Bank Internasional Indonesia (BII), predicted the inflation in July will be high; following the annual cycle of inflation.
"The increase of inflation in July will reach 1.14 per cent," he said.
Despite his projection for July, Juniman believes that the inflation rate until the end of the year will remain within Bank Indonesia's (BI) target of about 3.5 to 5.5 percent.
