Japanese Investors Aggressive in Food and Beverage Sector

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Latest data from the Industry Ministry showed the food and beverage industry growth had reached 9.47 percent in the first quarter of 2014. The chairman of the Association of Food and Beverage Business Owners (Gapmmi), Adhi Siswaja Lukman, said the rapid growth was supported by investments in 2013 that began to bear fruit this year.
"A lot of investment come to Indonesia, particularly from Japan," Adhi told Tempo on Monday, July 14, 2014.
Japanese investors seem to be keen on investing in the food and beverage industry, especially in instant spices and flavor enhancers. To date, Japanese investors have been persistently aggressive to plow the Indonesian market.
Adhi said the huge market potential, indicated by large populations, was among the reasons. Indonesia's population currently accounts for 40 percent of the ASEAN population.
According to Adhi, the investors thought it would be easier for them to penetrate other ASEAN nations if they already secured 40 percent of the ASEAN market through Indonesia. He added the investors also set high quality standards.
"It would not be hard for them to penetrate other countries' markets," Adhi said.
