TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director of Indonesian Meet Producer and Feedlot (Apfindo), Johny Liano, welcomed the government’s move to decrease import duty to zero percent. According to Johny, the incentive was government’s effort to reduce imported meat to Indonesia.
“The government is striving to increase the domestic population [of cattle],” Johny told Tempo on Friday, July 11, 2014.
Johny hoped that the government would soon enforce the regulation so that the plan could be realized in five years.
“To achieve the goal, the government must increase cattle population by one million per year,” Johny said.
Johny added that the import duty incentive would not affect the meat price during Ramadan this year since it would take about three years to produce beef.
In addition to the incentive, Johny said, the government must also craft Palm-Cattle Integration System. With the system, cattle dung can be utilized as compost or organic fertilizer, plant wastes; like leaves, twigs and weeds; can be utilized as cattle food.
Earlier, Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi hoped to decrease cattle import duty to zero percent to encourage investments in farming.
