TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Brazil finally outdid Chile in a penalty kick, 3-2, after going through an exhausting 120-minute match in Estadio Governador Magalhaes Pinto, yesterday. Chile proved their quality as a tough contender by holding Brazil in draw 1-1 throughout the normal time plus 2 x 15 additional.
Brazil celebrated their first goal as David Luiz sunk the bouncing ball that came from Thiago Silva’s headshot in the 18th. La Roja - full of confident - equalized the score through Alexis Sanchez in the 32nd.
Brazil could have won the match if Hulk’s goal in the 55th was not annulled by the referee Howard Webb. Webb ruled that Hulk handled the ball with his arm.
Despite many attempts both teams created, the game continued scoreless until normal time and additional time ended.
Brazil was elected to shoot first in the penalty kick shootout and David Luiz scored the first penalty with a long run-up. Marcelo and Neymar also successfully did their job to score points for Selecao.
Brazil’s goal keeper Julio Cesar saved his net from Chile’s Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez. Chile’s last shooter failed to do his mission after his shot only hit the bar. Brazil won the penalty kick and will face Columbia in the quarter final.
