TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foods that contained the mortuary preservative, or formaldehyde, were found, when Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil conducted a sudden inspection at traditional market Cihaurgeulis on Jalan Surapati (Suci) Bandung, Friday, June 27. He personally tested noodles from a seller, and it was positive with formaldehyde.
“Although sellers do not understand, we will still confiscate the food and find out its source,” he said. They will report this to the police, once they found its evidence.
The West Java's Food and Medicine Controlling Board (BPOM) officer Fauzi Ferdiansyah said foods that contain formaldehyde cannot be sold because if consumed for a long term, it will damage organs, such as, kidneys. “Foods that contain formaldehyde are shinier, and its textures are a little bit elastic if pulled, it also smells like preservatives,” he said.
Prior to the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil is accompanied by the Industry and Trade Agency’s Small and Medium Enterprise Department head Ema Sumarna to conduct sudden inspections to anticipate increased number of foods with preservatives that could endanger health.
