Trimmed Budget for Women in Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The budget for women that comes from the Yogyakarta Regional budgets will be trimmed in 2015. Yogyakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission D member, Esti Wijayati, said the budget to support women has been cut from Rp4 billion to Rp1 million. "The 2014 budget for women has not been absorbed well."

Esti gave an example, where not all women want to be examined in the early cancer detection program. For instance, only 10 out of 60 women were willing to participate in the program. She said the money for women’s health reproductive in Yogyakarta is still low. This has hampered promoting the right for women’s health reproductive health. As a result, women in villages have not fully understood the importance of the right to women’s reproductive health.

According to Esti, they need to work hard to solve women’s reproductive health issues. Not all Yogyakarta council members care about this issue. She also regretted that the number of female members who have been selected in 2014 has decreased, from 12 to 6 people.

Indonesian Planned Parenthood Association (PKBI) Yogyakarta chairman, Budi Wahyuni, said the public should demand for the council members to care about women’s conditions. The protection for the women's right to reproductive health is inadequate, she said. For instance, not all women have examinations reproductive health examinations.
