TEMPO.CO, Recife - Beach and sunny summer is a pleasant combination when you are in Brazil. However, tourists who continue to flow to the samba country for the World Cup may not know that sharks are lurking around the beaches. Brazil government has increased beach patrols and erected sign boards to warn tourists about the shark attack.
Boa Viagem Beach is one of favorite tourist spots that is located several kilometers away from Recife City. The city is currently popular for hosting five World Cup matches, yet many are clueless that the city is also popular for its fatal shark attack.
According to the state's Shark Incident Monitoring Committee, 59 people have been attacked by sharks in or near Recife since 1992. Only 11 months ago, 18-year-old Bruna Gobbi of Sao Paulo died after a shark attack at Boa Viagem.
"We reinforced our safety protocol near hotels because of these shark attacks," the fire department spokesman, Valdy Oliveira said. "We have specially done it in places where water is murky."
