TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairman of the General Election Commission (KPU), Husni Kamil Manik, said that empirically, two-round presidential election is unlikely to happen. "Empirically, that is unlikely because in the last presidential election, a pair scored a high number of votes."
Husni mentioned that back in 2009, there were three pairs of presidential candidates namely Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono-Boediono, Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo Subianto, and Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto. Out of the three pairs, SBY-Boediono scored the highest number of votes. "Therefore, popular vote (50 percent) and electoral college (minimum 20 percent in 18 provinces) are likely met," he said. Moreover, given the number of pairs in this year's presidential election, people believe that presidential election will take only one round to decide.
Therefore, KPU believes that the regulation No. 21/2014 on two-round presidential election is proper. "However, it leaves discussion as to whether it should be reviewed. Some groups were also proposing judicial review to the Constitutional Court. We respect the process. The court will later decide," said Husni.
