TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - BankIndonesia plans to encourage the use of electronic money (e-money) by establishing links banks and transportation operators. According to Rosmaya Hadi, the central bank's Department of Payment System Policy and Monitoring executive director, rapid growth in transportation facilities could promote a more efficient national payment system. "This is also a strategy to face the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community next year," she said, at the Jakarta Kota Station.
Kereta Api Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) launched its electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) system yesterday in collaboration with three state-owned banks, Bank Mandiri, Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) and Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI). Products such as Mandiri E-Money, BNI TapCash and BRIZZI can be used to buy tickets for Jabodetabek trains. Rosmaya believes this would lead to an increase in e-money transactions because commuter train passengers is expected to reach 600,000 people a day. "This will be a challenge to payment system providers, which will be required to maintain their technological quality," she added.
KCJ CEO, Tri Handoyo, said that use of e-money was beneficial for both consumers and the company. For the company, e-money can reduce accumulation of cash in ticketing counters. The commuter line managers have been burdened by cash transactions worth Rp 3 billion per day. "Accumulation of cash in the station is risky," he said.
Tri said that KCJ will cooperate with more e-money providers. He is sure that more passengers will use e-money because of its practicality. As of today, 60 percent of the passengers prefer non-cash transaction with e-ticket, while the rest choose to buy single trip ticket. "Slowly, all will shift to e-ticket," he said, "it all depends on how each bank promotes its products."
