TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yura A. Djalins, Deputy Director of Policy and Payment System Supervision at Bank Indonesia said that most economic transactions in Indonesia still involve cash. "People's understanding [on electronic money] is still limited," he said in a discussion on electronic money on Wednesday, June 11, 2014.
The tradition of using cash in a transaction has hampered the growth of electronic money (e-money) transaction. Yura asserted that one of the causes why people are reluctant to utilize e-money was the fact that the telecommunications industry and financial institutions are insisted on running their own products.
To encourage the utilization of e-money, Bank Indonesia continues to educate people by establishing cash-less trial area at University of Indonesia from August to September 2013.
The central bank works together with the campus to start introducing e-money on a number of food stalls in the campus' cafeteria. Yura claimed that the trial was a success and will continue with another program in 10 other major cities backed by Bank Indonesia's representative offices.
